This is untrue at least two people were killed on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway before it opened to the public. Huskisson is often reported as the first railway fatality, including in ordinarily reliable sources. Parkside: William Huskisson was fatally wounded at the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway when he was hit by Stephenson's Rocket.
